What is the difference between Waxed, Synthetic, and Hybrid Sands? All three Sands are performance-grade hydrophobic sand (afraid of water). The sand stays dry even when fully submerged. The difference is how they are used to perform Sands of the Desert, as described below:

  • Waxed Sand is first poured into the hand, squeezed (clumped), and then placed into the water. The result is a very strong clump of sand that when removed from the water and squeezed in the hand again, breaks open full of dry sand. Our Waxed Sands are based on the earliest published recipe.
  • Synthetic Sands is poured from the hand or a container into water and piles up into a dry column or ball at the bottom. It breaks open to reveal the dry sand the moment it hits the air. Synthetic Sand is self-working and very easy to use. Highly recommended to magicians who are new to the trick. Used by professionals worldwide.
  • Hybrid Sands is waxed sand coated with a super-hydrophobic synthetic second layer. We use a special manufacturing process to retain the desirable features of both types of sand. Hybrid Sand can be clumped or poured. It has the durability of Waxed Sand with the performance of Synthetics.

Which Sand should I buy? If you are unsure, start with Synthetic Sands of the Desert. It’s the easiest to use for someone new to the trick.

Is the Sand reusable? Yes, all three types of Sand are reusable thanks to the durable coatings we use to treat our Sand. The number of times depends on many factors, and some Sand is lost with each performance.

How much Sand do I use per performance? Most performers use the minimum amount; about three (3) ounces of each color. A full, one-pound bag of Sand is good for 15 initial performances, and 3-5 additional performances, or roughly 60 performances total.

Do Refill Packs come with instructions? Yes! The same instructions that come with the Starter Packs. Every Sands product on the site comes with Sand and instructions.

What else do I need to perform Sands of the Desert? For the main routine, if you’re using Black Water you will need a clear glass bowl or aquarium, otherwise it’s needs to be an opaque bowl or vessel. Glass works best so that it’s easily cleaned. You want something that holds about a gallon of water with a mouth large enough to submerge your hands.

Who makes your Sand? We do. Using proprietary methods not available from any other brand. We continue to innovate Sands of the Desert, creating new options and expanding routines.

What is the difference between Black Water Clear Water and Black Water Pouches? With Black Water Clear Water the water turns back clear again at the end of the trick. The pigment used with Black Water Pouches cannot be turned back clear again.

When will my order ship? Most orders ship within 72 hours, Monday – Friday. However, we are the manufacturer of Sands of the Desert and Black Water Clear Water for a global customer base, and thus supply a significant demand. All orders ship within thirty days.

When will my order arrive? Most U.S. orders arrive within 3-5 days after dispatch. International orders typically arrive within two weeks.

What is your return & refund policy? You may return anything you purchase direct from Sands of the Desert website within thirty (30) days for a store credit minus shipping and a 25% restocking fee (contact us for an RMA number). We do not offer refunds for any reason.

What payment methods do you accept? We accept all major credit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.

Are Sands of the Desert products offered wholesale? Yes, please use the Sands of the Desert Wholesale Order Form to place your wholesale order.
